Hexagram 29
坎 Kǎn
The Abysmal Water
☵ Water above ☵ Water
Judgment
Commentary
Danger doubled—this is the situation, not your attitude. Sincerity in the heart leads to success. Whatever you do works when inner truth guides action. Water teaches the lesson: flow continuously, fill every depression completely, never shrink from plunging through. Thoroughness and forward movement—these prevent perishing in danger.
Classical Text
Repeated Kan; Kan below, Kan above. Repeated Kan, There is sincerity, and the heart alone finds Success, Action will be esteemed. 'There is sincerity' — sincerity means trustworthiness; because the firm and correct is within, therefore there is trustworthiness. 'The heart alone finds Success' — the yang does not issue outward but resides within; this is the heart alone finding Success, meaning the heart attains free passage. 'Action will be esteemed' — within is free passage, without is darkness; within is firmness, without is yielding. To traverse danger with these qualities makes one's undertaking worthy of esteem, hence it says 'action will be esteemed.' Note: Among the names of all hexagrams, none adds an extra character before the hexagram name. That the name of the Kan hexagram specially adds 'Repeated' is because Kan represents danger and difficulty, hence the special addition of 'Repeated.' 'Repeated' has two meanings: first, it means doubling — the upper and lower are both Kan, meaning danger is layered upon danger, and only through the layering of danger does the function of danger come into being. Second, when a person traverses danger, one must first practice and become accustomed to the matter before one can succeed — hence 'Repeated.'

Water flows on without stopping, reaching its goal. The person of character makes virtue consistent, not occasional, and teaches through repetition. Constancy in danger, constancy in teaching. The pattern holds.
Lines
Falling into a pit within the abyss. Double danger through familiarity. You've grown used to what's dangerous, allowed it to become part of you. This is the beginning of real misfortune.
Classical commentary
Initial Six: Repeated Kan — one enters the pit within the pit. Misfortune.
The abyss has danger. Seek only small gains now. You cannot escape immediately—don't try. Hold position, don't be overwhelmed. Like a spring that tarries before finding its way into the open, accept the constraint.
Classical commentary
Nine in the Second: In the pit there is danger; seeking, one achieves something small.
Forward is abyss, backward is abyss. Pause. Wait. Every movement leads into danger. Escape is impossible right now. Acting from frustration only bogs you deeper. Remain until a way shows itself.
Classical commentary
Six in the Third: Coming and going, pit upon pit; danger and unrest — one enters the pit within the pit. Do not act.
A jug of wine, a bowl of rice, earthen vessels passed through the window. Sincerity in danger, simplicity under pressure. Formalities drop away; what matters is the honest intention of mutual help. No blame in this.
Classical commentary
Six in the Fourth: A jar of wine, a pair of bamboo vessels for grain, using earthen pots — offerings of simplicity are presented through the window. In the end, no blame.
The abyss fills to the rim but not beyond. The way out is the line of least resistance. Water doesn't rise higher than necessary. Great labors can't happen now—just get out of the danger. That's enough.
Classical commentary
Nine in the Fifth: The pit does not overflow; only when it is already level — no blame.
Bound and imprisoned, thorns on every side. For three years, lost. This is the culmination of wrong turns—entangled completely, no prospect of escape. The path disappeared long ago.
Classical commentary
Top Six: Bound with cords and ropes, placed amid a thicket of thorns — for three years one does not find release. Misfortune.
