Terrain Maps

The commander must first study terrain maps thoroughly: the dangers of Huanyuan Pass, the waters of Lanche, the named mountains and connecting valleys, the rivers and hills, the marshes and forests. Know all the distances of roads, the sizes of cities, the locations of ruined and prosperous settlements. Map all interlocking terrain features and store them — only then can you march armies and assault cities. Know terrain to know form; know form, but knowing ability is better; knowing ability, but knowing intent is best. The commander's clarity, the minister's knowledge, the general's capability — these three together are called 'complete readiness.'
