Guan Zhong said: 'The trouble of not being good in oneself — do not worry that others do not know you. Cinnabar in the mountain, the people know and take it; fine pearls in the deep, the people know and take it. Therefore when I have faults, the people need no wrong commands — the people observe clearly and one cannot hide from them to do wrong. When I have merit, they establish my praise; when I have faults, they establish my criticism.' When Guan Zhong lay dying, Duke Huan asked what instructions he had. Guan Zhong said: 'I beg my lord to dismiss Yi Ya, Shu Diao, Tang Wu, and Prince Kai Fang. Yi Ya cooked his own son to please my lord — human nature does not fail to love its children; one who does not love his child, what will he do for my lord? Shu Diao castrated himself to manage my lord's inner palace — human nature does not fail to love its own body; one who does not love his body, what will he do for my lord?' After Guan Zhong's death, the Duke dismissed the four but recalled them within the year. They besieged the Duke in a single room; he starved to death, and eleven days passed before the maggots crawled out and anyone knew he was dead.
