Establish what is proper and set up what exists; take stillness as the foundation, timeliness as the treasure, governance as the standard — and harmony can endure. What is not my standard, though profitable, I do not pursue. What is not my proper course, though profitable, I do not take. Above, follow heaven; next, follow man. Man does not initiate, and others do not respond; heaven does not begin, and nothing follows. Trace origins and calculate realities — go back to where things were born. The Way speaks in one voice and serves for one person without seeming insufficient; the whole realm practices it without seeming inadequate. Whoever can model the lawless? Whoever can begin the beginningless? Whoever can end the endless? Merit accomplished — the achiever is ruined. Name established — the named is diminished. Who can abandon name and merit and return to be the same as all people? The Way is as great as heaven, as broad as earth, as heavy as stone, as light as a feather. What the people depend on — few know it.
