請成相

A Song of Counsel

請成相:世之殃,愚闇愚闇墮賢良!人主無賢,如瞽無相,何倀倀!

Let me sing a working song: the world's calamity — stupidity and darkness, stupidity and darkness bring down the worthy! A ruler without worthy ministers is like a blind man without a guide — how he stumbles!

Notes

1context

The Cheng Xiang is unique in the Xunzi as a work composed in the rhythm of folk work songs (相, a percussive instrument beaten during labor). Xunzi uses this popular form to convey his political philosophy in a memorizable, rhythmic format — an early example of using popular culture for philosophical education.
