宋康王
King Kang
Last ruler, attempted expansion before fall
Biography 傳
King Kang was the final ruler of Song, a ruler whose aggressive ambitions overreached Song's limited capacity. Defying Song's small-state tradition of defensive Mohism, he launched expansionist campaigns, annexing small neighboring territories and even defeating Qi temporarily. He styled himself as a hegemon, attempting to revive Song as a major power. However, his aggression provoked a coalition response: Qi, Wei, and Chu jointly invaded and partitioned Song around 286 BC. King Kang was killed, and Song disappeared from the map of Warring States China. His story serves as a cautionary tale about the limits of power for a small state.
