九守

Be calm, unhurried, and still. Let gentle restraint be settled first. Empty the heart-mind and level the intentions, then wait. The eyes prize clarity, the ears prize keenness, the heart-mind prizes wisdom. If you see with the eyes of all under heaven, nothing will go unseen. If you hear with the ears of all under heaven, nothing will go unheard. If you think with the heart-mind of all under heaven, nothing will go unknown.

When the heart-mind does not perform the work of the nine orifices, the nine orifices function properly. When the ruler does not perform the work of the five officials, the five officials function properly. To those who do good, the ruler gives rewards; to those who do wrong, the ruler gives punishments. The ruler relies on what comes to him naturally and responds accordingly — thus he need not toil. Names and realities generate each other and reciprocally form each other's true nature. When names and realities correspond, there is order; when they do not correspond, there is disorder.
