Rapid Battle When Encircled
武王問太公曰：「敵人圍我，斷我前後，絕我糧道，為之奈何？」太公曰：「此天下之困兵也。暴用之則勝，徐用之則敗。如此者，為四武沖陣，以武車驍騎，驚亂其軍，而疾擊之，可以橫行。」武王曰：「若已出圍地，欲因以為勝，為之奈何？」太公曰：「左軍疾左，右軍疾右，無與敵人爭道。中軍迭前迭後，敵人雖眾，其將可走。」
King Wu asked Taigong: "If the enemy encircles us, cuts off our front and rear, and severs our supply lines — what should be done?" Taigong said: "This is the most desperate situation for any army in the realm. Act with explosive speed and you will prevail; act with hesitation and you will be defeated. In such circumstances, form the Four Martial Assault Formation, using war wagons and elite cavalry to throw the enemy army into confusion, then strike with maximum speed — you can break through in any direction." King Wu said: "If we have already broken out of the encirclement and wish to turn it into a victory, what should be done?" Taigong said: "Send the left army racing to the left, the right army racing to the right — do not contest the same path as the enemy. The center army alternates between advancing and withdrawing. Even if the enemy is numerous, their general can be routed."
Notes
The Four Martial Assault Formation (四武沖陣) is a key tactical formation in the Liutao, consisting of war wagons and elite troops arranged to break through enemy encirclement. It appears repeatedly throughout the Tiger Secret Teaching as the primary solution for desperate tactical situations.
