Righteousness Issues from Heaven

子墨子曰:「義不從愚且賤者出,必自貴且知者出。」何以知義之不從愚且賤者出,而必自貴且知者出也?曰:義者,善政也。然則孰為貴?孰為知?曰:天為貴,天為知而已矣,然則義果自天出矣。

Master Mozi said: 'Righteousness does not issue from the foolish and lowly, but must issue from the noble and wise.' How do we know that righteousness does not issue from the foolish and lowly but must issue from the noble and wise? Because righteousness is good government. Then who is noble? Who is wise? Heaven is noble, Heaven is wise -- that is all. Therefore righteousness truly issues from Heaven.

Heaven's Intentions

子墨子曰:「天之意,不欲大國之攻小國也,大家之亂小家也,強之暴寡,詐之謀愚,貴之傲賤,此天之所不欲也。不止此而已,欲人之有力相營,有道相教,有財相分也。又欲上之強聽治也,下之強從事也。」

Master Mozi said: 'Heaven's intentions: it does not desire great states to attack small states, great families to disrupt small families, the strong to oppress the few, the cunning to plot against the foolish, or the noble to be arrogant toward the humble -- these are what Heaven does not desire. This is not all: it desires that those with strength assist one another, those with the Way teach one another, and those with wealth share with one another. It further desires that those above diligently attend to governance, and those below diligently engage in their work.'

Heaven's Will Measures Right and Wrong Like Compass and Square

故子墨子之有天之意也,上將以度天下之王公大人為刑政也,下將以量天下之萬民為文學、出言談也。觀其行,順天之意,謂之善意行;反天之意,謂之不善意行。觀其言談,順天之意,謂之善言談;反天之意,謂之不善言談。觀其刑政,順天之意,謂之善刑政;反天之意,謂之不善刑政。

Therefore Master Mozi's possession of Heaven's will serves above to measure the kings, dukes, and great men of the realm in their governance, and below to measure the myriad people of the realm in their scholarship and discourse. Observe their conduct: what conforms to Heaven's will is called good conduct; what opposes Heaven's will is called bad conduct. Observe their discourse: what conforms to Heaven's will is called good discourse; what opposes Heaven's will is called bad discourse. Observe their governance: what conforms to Heaven's will is called good governance; what opposes Heaven's will is called bad governance.
