蝸角之爭

War on a Snail's Horn

有所謂蝸者,君知之乎?有國於蝸之左角者,曰觸氏;有國於蝸之右角者,曰蠻氏。時相與爭地而戰,伏屍數萬,逐北旬有五日而後反。

There is a creature called a snail — do you know it? There is a kingdom on the snail's left horn called the Trigger People, and a kingdom on its right horn called the Savage People. From time to time they wage war over territory, corpses lie in tens of thousands, and the vanquished are pursued for fifteen days before they return.

Notes

1context

The 'war on a snail's horn' (蝸角之爭) became a famous Chinese idiom for petty quarrels over insignificant matters. In context, the story is told to the King of Wei to make him see that his territorial disputes with the King of Qi are, from the perspective of the cosmos, no more significant than wars between nations perched on a snail's antennae.
