趙武靈王

King Wuling

Implemented Hufu cavalry reform

Strong cavalry tradition, aggressive defense, tactical excellence. Known for the Hufu cavalry reform. Brave but sometimes strategically reckless — the disaster at Changping exemplifies tactical talent undermined by political misjudgment.

Biography

King Wuling of Zhao was one of the most innovative rulers of the Warring States period, famous for his revolutionary 'Hufu Qishe' reform — adopting the clothing and cavalry tactics of the northern nomadic peoples. In 307 BC, he ordered his army to abandon traditional chariot warfare and Chinese robes in favor of mounted archery and nomadic-style trousers, a decision that faced fierce resistance from conservative nobles but dramatically improved Zhao's military capabilities. This reform allowed Zhao to expand its territory northward into nomadic lands and compete effectively with Qin. Later in his reign, he abdicated to focus on military campaigns, but a succession crisis led to his imprisonment in a palace and death by starvation.
