Zhao (趙) — Chinese ink painting

Zhao Zhào

兵家 Military pragmatism

Character 性格

Strong cavalry tradition, aggressive defense, tactical excellence. Known for the Hufu cavalry reform. Brave but sometimes strategically reckless — the disaster at Changping exemplifies tactical talent undermined by political misjudgment.

Historical Overview 歷史

Zhao emerged from the partition of Jin in 403 BC and quickly distinguished itself through military innovation. King Wuling's 'Hufu' reform (c. 307 BC) — adopting nomadic cavalry tactics and clothing — was one of the most dramatic military reforms of the era. Zhao produced exceptional generals (Li Mu, Lian Po) but suffered catastrophically at the Battle of Changping (260 BC) when the inexperienced Zhao Kuo replaced Lian Po, resulting in 400,000 casualties. This single battle sealed Zhao's fate.
