燕昭王

King Zhao

Rebuilt Yan and recruited Yue Yi

Cautious, northern frontier state, late mover. Ancient lineage but often passive. Capable of dramatic action when provoked (Yue Yi's campaign against Qi) but struggles with sustained strategic initiative.

Biography

King Zhao of Yan is credited with transforming Yan from a peripheral backwater into a genuine threat to the eastern powers. After Yan suffered a catastrophic defeat by Qi, he dedicated his reign to rebuilding the state. His most famous act was building a 'Golden Terrace' to recruit talented advisors — a gesture of humility and generosity that became legendary. On this platform, he personally served Yue Yi (a Wei general) as if Yue Yi were his teacher, persuading him to serve Yan. King Zhao also sent Su Qin to Qi as a long-term spy, a patient diplomatic operation that sowed discord in Qi while Yan prepared for war. His twenty-eight-year reign set the stage for Yan's great campaign against Qi.
