Yan Yān
儒家 Conservative ConfucianismCharacter 性格
Cautious, northern frontier state, late mover. Ancient lineage but often passive. Capable of dramatic action when provoked (Yue Yi's campaign against Qi) but struggles with sustained strategic initiative.
Historical Overview 歷史
Yan was one of the oldest states, tracing its lineage to the Duke of Shao in the early Zhou dynasty. Located in the far northeast (modern Beijing/Hebei), Yan was geographically isolated from the central plains power struggles. This isolation meant Yan was often a secondary player, but King Zhao's recruitment of Yue Yi led to one of the most dramatic campaigns of the era — the near-destruction of Qi around 284 BC. Yan's assassination attempt on Qin Shi Huang (Jing Ke, 227 BC) is one of the most famous episodes of the period.
