“Strong cavalry tradition, aggressive defense, tactical excellence. Known for the Hufu cavalry reform. Brave but sometimes strategically reckless — the disaster at Changping exemplifies tactical talent undermined by political misjudgment.”
Biography 傳
Lin Xiangru was a brilliant diplomat and statesman of Zhao, best known for his legendary exploits involving the He Shi Bi jade — one of the most famous stories of the Warring States period. When Qin's king offered fifteen cities in exchange for Zhao's priceless He Shi Bi jade, Lin Xiangru was sent to negotiate. Recognizing that Qin had no intention of honoring the exchange, he dramatically threatened to shatter the jade against a pillar unless Qin's king observed proper diplomatic protocol. He then secretly returned the jade to Zhao intact while remaining in Qin long enough to escape. For his extraordinary service, he was appointed chief minister of Zhao. His reconciliation with General Lian Po — accepting public humiliation for the good of the state — became a classic virtue tale.
