信陵君

Lord Xinling

One of the Four Lords, saved Zhao at Handan

Early hegemon that declined through strategic overextension. Strong bureaucratic tradition. Economically sophisticated but gradually squeezed between Qin and Qi. A cautionary tale of power squandered.

Biography

Lord Xinling (Wei Wuji) was one of the Four Lords of the Warring States, celebrated for dramatic action and his legend of gallantry. When Qin besieged Zhao's capital Handan in 257 BC, Zhao's Lord Pingyuan appealed to Wei for help. Initially, the Wei king feared Qin and refused to commit his army. Lord Xinling, defying his own king, stole the military seal from the king's bedchamber using his brother's concubine, raised a personal army, and led the relief of Handan — saving Zhao from certain destruction. His action broke Qin's momentum for decades. After this act of insubordination, he remained in Zhao for over a decade, returning to Wei only in the state's final crisis.
