Six Things That Must Cover the World

King Wen asked Taigong: 'What does it take to rule the world?' Taigong said: 'Magnanimity that covers the world — only then can you contain the world. Trustworthiness that covers the world — only then can you bind the world. Humaneness that covers the world — only then can you embrace the world. Kindness that covers the world — only then can you protect the world. Authority that covers the world — only then can you not lose the world. Acting without hesitation — then neither heaven's cycles can shift you, nor changing times can move you. When these six are complete, then you can govern the world.'

Only the Man of the Way Holds It

Therefore, he who benefits the world, the world opens to him. He who harms the world, the world closes against him. He who gives life to the world, the world reveres him. He who kills the world, the world treats him as an enemy. He who opens the world, the world connects with him. He who impoverishes the world, the world hates him. He who gives the world peace, the world relies on him. He who endangers the world, the world treats him as a disaster. The world does not belong to one man — only the man who possesses the Way may hold it.'
