Complete Preparedness of Equipment
武王問太公曰：「引兵深入諸侯之地，遇深溪、大谷、險阻之水，吾三軍未得畢濟，而天暴雨，流水大至，後不得屬於前，無有舟梁之備，又無草木之資，吾欲必濟，使三軍不稽留，為之奈何？」太公曰：「凡帥師將眾，慮不先設，器械不備，教不素信，士卒不習，若此，不可以為王者之兵也。凡三軍有大事，莫不習用器械。攻城圍邑，則有軒轅、臨沖；視城中，則有雲梯、飛樓；三軍行止，則有武沖、大櫓，前後拒守；絕道遮街，則有材士強弩，衛其兩旁；設營壘，則有天羅、武落、行馬、蒺藜；晝則登雲梯遠望，立五色旌旗；夜則設雲火萬炬，擊雷鼓，振鼙鐸，吹鳴笳；越溝塹，則有飛橋、轉關、轆轤；濟大水，則有天潢、飛江；逆波上流，則有浮海、絕江。三軍用備，主將何憂？」
King Wu asked Taigong: "If we lead our army deep into hostile territory and encounter deep streams, great valleys, and dangerous waters, and our three armies have not yet fully crossed when a violent rainstorm sends floodwaters surging toward us so that the rear cannot connect with the front — with no boats or bridges prepared and no timber at hand — if I absolutely must get across without delaying the three armies, what should be done?" Taigong said: "Any commander who leads an army but fails to plan ahead, lacks equipment, has not earned his troops' trust through consistent training, and whose soldiers are unpracticed — such a force cannot serve as a king's army. Whenever the three armies face a major undertaking, there is nothing for which equipment should not be prepared and practiced. For besieging cities and surrounding towns, there are Xuanyuan rams and Approaching Assault towers. For observing inside cities, there are cloud ladders and flying towers. For the three armies' march and halt, there are Martial Assault wagons and Great Shields to guard front and rear. For cutting roads and blocking streets, there are elite crossbowmen guarding both flanks. For establishing camps, there are Heaven's Nets, Martial Barriers, mobile obstacles, and caltrops. By day, climb cloud ladders to observe from afar and raise five-colored banners. By night, set ten thousand signal torches, beat thunder drums, shake bells and hand-drums, and blow sounding horns. For crossing ditches and moats, there are flying bridges, winch pulleys, and capstans. For crossing great rivers, there are Heaven's Pool boats and Flying River pontoons. For going against the current upstream, there are Sea-Floaters and River-Crossers. When the three armies are fully equipped, what has the commanding general to worry about?"
