The Fourteen Vulnerabilities

King Wu asked Taigong: "The key to employing troops requires war chariots and fierce cavalry, mobile formations and selected vanguard forces — when an opportunity appears, strike. Under what conditions should one strike?" Taigong said: "One who wishes to strike should carefully examine the enemy for fourteen vulnerabilities. When a vulnerability appears, strike — and the enemy will certainly be defeated." King Wu said: "May I hear of the fourteen vulnerabilities?" Taigong said: "When the enemy has just assembled — strike. When men and horses have not yet eaten — strike. When the weather works against them — strike. When they have not secured advantageous terrain — strike. When they are on the run — strike. When they are off guard — strike. When they are exhausted — strike. When the general is separated from his soldiers — strike. When they are on a long march — strike. When they are fording a river — strike. When they are pressed for time — strike. When they are struggling through narrow and difficult roads — strike. When their march formation is in disorder — strike. When their hearts are gripped by fear — strike."
