選車士之法
The Method of Selecting Chariot Officers
King Wu asked Taigong: "How should chariot officers be selected?" Taigong said: "The method for selecting chariot officers: take men under forty years of age, seven feet five inches or taller, who can run fast enough to chase a galloping horse and leap aboard it at full speed, who can maneuver in all directions — front, rear, left, right, up and down — while handling banners and flags. Their strength must be sufficient to draw an eight-dan crossbow, shooting in all directions with equal facility. Such men are called Martial Chariot Warriors — they must be generously rewarded."
Notes
The physical requirements described here — chasing a galloping horse on foot and leaping aboard — represent an extraordinary standard of athletic ability. The eight-dan (石) crossbow required approximately 160 pounds of draw force. These selection criteria ensured that chariot crews were among the most elite warriors in the army.
