The Method of Selecting Cavalry Officers

King Wu asked Taigong: "How should cavalry officers be selected?" Taigong said: "The method for selecting cavalry officers: take men under forty years of age, seven feet five inches or taller, who are robust, agile, and swift, surpassing all their peers. They must be able to gallop on horseback while drawing and shooting a bow in all directions — front, rear, left, and right — maneuvering and advancing and retreating freely, leaping across ditches and moats, climbing hills and ridges, braving dangerous obstacles, crossing great marshes, charging strong enemies, and throwing large formations into disorder. Such men are called Martial Cavalry Warriors — they must be generously rewarded."
