王霸 (Kings and Hegemons) — Chinese ink painting

荀子 Xunzi · Chapter 11

王霸

Kings and Hegemons

View:

義立而王信立而霸

Duty Establishes Kingship; Trust Establishes Hegemony

故用國者,義立而王,信立而霸,權謀立而亡。三者明主之所謹擇也,仁人之所務白也。

Therefore in employing the state: when duty is established, one becomes a true king; when trust is established, one becomes a hegemon; when scheming and stratagem are established, one perishes. These three are what a wise ruler carefully chooses among, and what the humane person strives to make clear.

粹而王駁而霸

Pure Brings Kingship; Mixed Brings Hegemony

故曰:「粹而王,駁而霸,無一焉而亡。」此之謂也。

Therefore it is said: 'Purity brings kingship, mixture brings hegemony, and having neither brings destruction.' This is what it means.
