李牧

Li Mu

Brilliant northern frontier general

Strong cavalry tradition, aggressive defense, tactical excellence. Known for the Hufu cavalry reform. Brave but sometimes strategically reckless — the disaster at Changping exemplifies tactical talent undermined by political misjudgment.

Biography

Li Mu was arguably Zhao's finest general during the state's final decades, primarily responsible for defending the northern frontier against the Xiongnu nomads and later leading Zhao's defense against Qin. On the northern frontier, he developed a sophisticated intelligence network and won a decisive ambush against the Xiongnu that secured Zhao's northern border for years. Later, when Qin began its final offensive against Zhao, Li Mu repeatedly defeated the invading Qin armies — the only general capable of checking Qin's advance. Zhao's king, swayed by Qin's bribery of court officials and false claims that Li Mu was plotting rebellion, relieved him of command and had him executed in 229 BC. Within a year, Zhao fell to Qin.
