Biography 傳
Lian Po was one of Zhao's greatest generals, renowned for his defensive military genius and long service to the state. During the Battle of Changping (260 BC), he correctly assessed that the Zhao army was no match for Qin in open battle and adopted a fortified defensive strategy, holding the Qin advance at bay for years. His sound judgment was overruled by the king, who replaced him with the inexperienced Zhao Kuo — a change that led directly to the catastrophic defeat at Changping. After the disaster, Lian Po continued to serve Zhao with distinction in subsequent campaigns. He was also famous for his friendship with Lin Xiangru, encapsulated in the story of 'offering a thorny branch to apologize' after their initial rivalry.
