Biography

Shang Yang, originally named Gongsun Yang, was a Legalist reformer whose policies transformed Qin from a peripheral state into a centralized military power. As chief minister under Duke Xiao of Qin (r. 361–338 BC), he introduced a comprehensive system of meritocratic rewards and harsh punishments, abolished hereditary aristocratic privileges, and reorganized the agricultural and military systems. His reforms broke the power of the feudal nobility, established universal military conscription with promotions based on battlefield merit, and created the bureaucratic apparatus that would eventually conquer all of China.
